During June 13 to 15, William Joost, Materials technical director of the U.S. Department of Energy, and Eric Nyberg, Senior Engineer of PNNL(Pacific Northwest National Laboratory), responsible person of The U.S. side for MFERD project(Magnesium Front End Research and Development ) of United States, Canada and China, and Engineer James Quinn, research director of General Motors Corp., USA, and PhD Mark Kozdras, responsible person for Automotive Materials project of Natural Resources Canada, and PhD Kumar Sadayappan of CANMET, and their party viewed the light alloy of R&D and industrialization for two days. The mission visited Chongqing University, Chongqing Academy of Science & Technology and Chongqing Boao Mg-Al Manufacturing Co., Ltd during in Chongqing.
On June 14, the delegation visited National Engineering Research Center for Magnesium Alloys in Chongqing University, discussed issues of technical exchange and cooperation research. Prof. Pan Fusheng, director of National Engineering Research Center for Magnesium Alloys, participated in the exchange forum. Prof. Peng Xiaodong and William Joost introduced the work foundation and development advantage of each other, respectively. Prof. Long Siyuan introduced the features of magnesium alloy smelting and recycling equipment in National Engineering Research Center for Magnesium Alloys. They discussed about the development of magnesium alloy, the industrialization, the transfer of products and the students training, and the establishment of the ways and mechanisms to strengthen cooperation. In addition, Prof. Zhang Jing, Prof. Peng Jian, Associate Prof. Chen Yuan, and Associate Prof. Wang Yong(Chongqing University) and Dr. Wang Kaiyang (Chongqing Academy of Science & Technology) were also participated in discussion.
The exchange forum was helpful for the further understanding of National Engineering Research Center for Magnesium Alloys for the government, enterprises and research institutions of United States and Canada. It would be advantageous to matters of both sides technical cooperation in the field of light alloy materials and energy materials, joint efforts and technology transfer.
